During the winter months, (if we spoiled LA folk can even call them that) we focus on ginger for so many wonderful health benefits. It seems like every green green juice now features ginger…so do smoothies, and almost every tea that claims to soothe a cold or flu. We know ginger is great to put IN our bodies…but what about ON our bodies?
The holidays can be very stressful! Wrapping up the end of the year, holiday shopping, social events…and lots of family time. I happen to love this time of year but too much of a good thing can be…well..too much! We all tend to over indulge this time of year and cold season is running rampant. Make sure you are taking care of yourself by drinking enough water, getting enough sleep and trying to relax whenever you can.
My favorite way to de-stress is a good ol’ fashioned soak in the tub! Bubble bath, bath salts and oils are wonderful…but what about taking it up a notch by adding fresh herbs and grated ginger?
If you are beginning to feel a cold coming on or just want to let go of the old junk you have been carrying around with you…grated ginger is the perfect elixir for you. Here is what you need for a Ginger Bath:
1/2 cup of fresh grated ginger
1 cup of epsom salt
Small hand towel to wipe away sweat if needed
Full tub of hot water (safe temp please!)
Using a large mouth grater, grate ginger. I filled a mesh tee steeper. If you don’t have one, you can use cheese cloth or even panty hose! Simply tie it up inside. You want the ginger “juice” to seep through, but the cloth or hose will hold in the grated pieces. You are more than welcome to just dump it right in the tub but clean up isn’t fun…for your body or the tub!
Fill the tub with the warmest water you can stand and pour in the salt. Swirl with hands so salt dissolves. Drop in tea bag (whatever you chose to use) of fresh ginger. Soak for 15-20 mins. Get out of tub and dry off. Don’t put on any lotion or oils. Wrap up in a cozy robe or big towel and get comfortable, it’s time to sweat! The ginger is going to really get your body going! You should sweat out any cold that is trying to move in. Make sure to drink a big glass of water! Feel free to add a lemon wedge.
After 30 minutes, rinse off in a cool shower. Feel free to moisturize now.
Drink another big glass of lemon water.
If the ginger/sweat/coldbuster doesn’t sound like your thing…why not try adding some fresh herbs to your tub? a big bowl of epsom salt with a handful of fresh rosemary will send all kinds of relaxation vibes your way.
Adding fresh rosemary to your bath has all kinds of wonderful health benefits.
Rosemary can help relieve joint and arthritis pain, fatigue, anxiety and even acts as a cleansing tonic for the skin.
Simple add 1 handful of fresh rosemary leaves to 1 cup of epsom salt and swirl throughout a warm tub of water till salt dissolves. I like to mash the rosemary leaves a bit, just to help release their oil. The hot water should do the rest.
*RGK tip! Skip the ginger and add 5 tbsp of melted coconut oil to the 1 c. of epsom salt & rosemary (roughly chop rosemary) and use as a fabulous and fresh scrub! A drop of mint essential oil would be divine too.
